Sandy: Your Church Is There
Hurricane Sandy
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) continues to monitor Hurricane Sandy. Last week, PDA reached out to all mid-councils in the projected path of the storm to encourage them to be prepared, and to let them know that PDA is available for an immediate response upon request. The impact and needs will become more clear once the storm makes landfall on the U.S. East coast.
PDA has called members of the National Response Team (NRT) so they may be of service where

Egyptian Presbyterians Request Prayer
![]() |
| Students at Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo |
New co-workers will prioritize the work of bringing Egyptian Presbyterians and American Presbyterians together to more fully share their lives in Christ.
Theological Education
There are ten Presbyterian seminaries nationwide, plus two that
are closely affiliated. As Presbyterians, we place a high value on an educated
clergy. It is a hallmark of our denomination — indeed, a source of pride. To
continue this tradition of excellence, we have entrusted 10 Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) seminaries and two theological institutions related to the
denomination by covenant agreement with the responsibility of educating and
equipping persons of faith for pastoral leadership.
Currently 3100 students are enrolled in Presbyterian
seminaries. One third of students are from underrepresented minorities.
Each Presbyterian congregation gives 1% of its budget to
support seminaries but the cost is much higher.
First Presbyterian is committed to a well-educated clergy.
The single largest gift from our World Mission Budget is to The Theological
Education Fund.

How We Make A Difference- Microfinance in Mexico
![]() |
| Carrillo Carvings Are Available in The Westminster Trade Cabinet |
Opportunity Mexico was launched in 2004 to provide financial
services for people suffering from unemployment and poverty. In Mexico 40% of
the population lives in poverty. Microfinance helps address root causes of
poverty.
Opportunity International
Our
vision is a world in which
all people have the opportunity to provide for their families and build a
fulfilling life.
Our belief is that small-scale entrepreneurs can be
big change agents in overcoming global poverty.
Our
mission is to empower
people to work their way out of chronic poverty, transforming their lives,
their children’s futures and their communities.
Our
method is to provide
microfinance services, including lending, savings, insurance and
transformational training, to people in need. To do this, we build and work
through sustainable, local microfinance institutions.
Our motivation is to respond to Jesus Christ’s call to
love and serve the poor.

Note From Congo: Bob and Kristi Rice
Greetings! We hope you are well. We appreciate your continued partnership in God’s work in Congo. Thank you for your financial contributions and for your prayers. We are thankful to know that you are standing with us and our Congolese brothers and sisters.
We are now in our third year in Kananga, DRC. We just returned to Congo after five months of medical leave, and are grateful for your prayers and God’s faithfulness in enabling us to return to Congo. In the midst of a challenging environment, we are inspired by the faith and hope of our colleagues in the Presbyterian Church in Congo. We feel privileged to serve alongside them in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ.
